I've done this. But I cheat really by using a mixing desk. And a second computer.

Looking briefly around the podcast community this seems to be the way it's done, as Skype doesn't have a way to route multiple audio sources to it.

First thanks for an awesome tool, it's been very useful.

I have started to gamemaster over the net using skype for talking and winamp + shoutcast for music.
Is there any way to have softrope send it's audio over the net? I've been trying to find a way to have the audio sent through Skype or some other program but the closest I have is livestream and that can't be used since it mixes in voices from the skype conversation, giving an annoying echo due to both playing at the same time. (And the delay of livestream makes it impossible to just mute skype for players, plus I use livestream to record sessions)

I have been trying to use a tool called Virtual Audio Cable which creates a virtual input and output that can then be sent inbetween other cables. But for it to work I need to specify which sound device softrope should send to and so far it only sends to my default audio device. Is there a way to change this? Or perhaps an easier solution. (VAC is fairly complex and annoying to work with to be honest)

Yeah, that would be great for ambient sounds. Not so much for everything, but awesome for specific things.

Background music for example. That does need spacial placement.

It's funny that you mention this, but I originally wanted to build something like that into maptool so as miniatures moved on the map, sound for them would change in placement and volume. The problem was that we don't really have a java developer on the team that specializes in sound so it will probably never happen. That is ok I guess, as long as someone makes a great sound mixer for me to use. ;)

How cool would it be to have like a sound map type affair, I can imagine this working really well on an iPad or other touch device.

Something that perhaps looked like this: http://twitpic.com/8625dj/full

Then you could drag the party around and the relative sound levels of anything on the map could change as the location of the party marker changes.

Another example of this is when the party moves closer to certain 'things', I want the ability to slowly increase the volume of that 'thing'. For example, let's say there are a bunch of guards snoring several rooms away. I might make their snores very low on the volume, and as the party gets closer, I increase the volume of the snores. Well, I have some scenes that may have 10+ sounds all playing at once, and will want to tweak those throughout the journey. As they move further away from the blacksmith, I drop that volume, as they get closer to the fountain, I increase that sound, etc.

Hello and thank you for making Softrope! I will make sure I plug it over on our forums (rptools.net)

I will have a whole list of ideas but let me start with this one first:

1. When I game, I sometimes need to make small control adjustments over certain pieces of audio. I might have it all mixed up well on my home speaker system, but when I run a game at my friends house, certain sounds may be quieter or louder than I want, so I will adjust them during play (I currently use RPGSoundmixer which doesn't work in anything better than WinXP so I am looking for a replacement which led me here). I love how your app feels in that it is pretty obvious to use - small learning curve, however, I cannot change any sound parameters while the mix is currently being playing. That is a must for me.

Thanks again!

Since this is one of my favorite essential DM software tools and I believe that hard work should be rewarded, I respectfully suggest that something like Kickstarter be started for this product. I think there's a niche here that needs to be filled -- there are other sound effects programs for RPGs, but they're neither as simple to use or as reliable to run.

To that end, I did a little research on outfits similar to Kickstarter, but that can be accessed in the UK.

But also, I'd just be delighted to see this project going forward in whatever direction. It's become a routine part of my DM'ing process, and I have a blast just fiddling around with sounds and prepping the next big encounter.

I agree that the piracy issue is a real one, but I'd also like to be able to take a scene I've made under one file and move it into another easily. For instance, I made a button that gives me melee combat noises under my "Dungeon" file, and I'd like to be able to straightforwardly copy and paste it into my other Softrope files without a hassle. But so far as I know, if I want that same combat button to be available in a different Softrope file, I have to recreate the whole thing from scratch. So there's a use for that sharing ability even if it's only for sharing with myself.
But also re: piracy, I made a lot of scenes that are just sound effects and which use nothing but sound files I downloaded from royalty free sites (of which there are several.) There should be no problem sharing those.

I also use Softrope for my D&D campaign. I wanted to add hundreds of sound files and looked for an option to specify as directory of sound file to chose randomly from, but this option doesn't exist. I see the save file is xml so I plan on trying to add the files through a text editor I use that has a nice macro feature. This will take 20 seconds opposed to god knows how long adding each of the hundreds of sound files using Softrope's GUI. :)

I hope you continue this project, I love it!

Though, bad side of this idea is it makes the save file humongous if you use a lot of sound files. Also, I'm sorry but it could make those files illegal since it won't be respecting copyrights (you have to own the original sound/music to be able to acquire it legally). So, for example, if you use a movie soundtrack in one of your module, if I don't own this soundtrack, it's illegal for me to get your file that contains those tracks.

What I think should be the next step is to add the possibillity to make scenes and modules self-contained. So that if I sit on one computer and makes a module, the clicks Save module the sound files are saved into the module. Then I can mail/dropbox/USB/floppy disk it to another computer with Softrope, import the module and voila, the module and all the saved files are there and work.

Like a button "Save scene" that could be used for sharing, like on this forum. If there was a thread: "Shared scenes" where people can upload their favorit scenes to others. And then a similar where you can save entire modules in the same way.

Thanks to some incoming posts on my Google+ stream, I’ve spotted a new upcoming RPG recently, by the name of Legends and Labyrinths.

I was directed to a blog post that outlined how L&L is different from other fantasy RPGs and it makes for a very interesting read.

My first reaction was, do we need another old school remake of early D&D? But I was wrong, it’s not an OGL clone but an entirely new creation from the dark mind of George Strayton, screenwriter and game designer.

It’s seems to have a feel of early D&D melded with elements of more modern RPG thinking and I can’t wait to give it a go.

I was so taken with the ideas and game-play possibilities, that I pledged some cash to the L&L Kickstarter Campaign, thereby securing my hardcopy of the book on release. That release date of course will be GenCon next month.

Check out the blog post about how L&L is different and if you it tickles your fancy then why not secure your own copy!?

Well the move is finished. We're safely in our new house.

We've closed the Gigajam regional office that only I was using and I've moved everything to home. I'm surrounded by computers, monitors, mixing desks, speakers, amps, guitars, and controller keyboards!

I'm fighting to lose some weight at the moment and am making the most of the fine weather to cycle around and get to know my new town and the surrounding countryside.

The house is still full of crap in cardboard boxes though and everything is in chaos. There's not enough space to store all our books, some shelf building is in order. Today I think there's even a trip to Ikea planned.

I did have time to open the Softrope project the other day and make sure it compiles! Soon there may even be time to work on it.

I'm not entirely sure what would be the best thing to do first, I think perhaps sharing scenes with other people is the best plan?

I just found this program, and it's wonderful xD. Although I forgot to save all my hard work making sound effects the other day :(. Anyways, I found a lot of neat effects on this webpage. I used these sound effects mainly for expressing monsters, and skills. I also used some for background noise or music. Storms, Lightning, Fire, Ect... They have really added to my "SFX" library.

If anyone finds a good page for 1 minute+ nature noises, Post it :D
P.S. Or any effects for a medieval or fantasy campaign.

http://www.sounddogs.com/subcategories.asp?CategoryID=1038&Type=1

To download Just Right click the MP3 button and "Save Link As..." Then just be sure its .mp3 xD

Also, one very good source of sounds and music for me are games. They often have folders with sounds (but most of the time they are packed into a non-standard format, so you might need to search the net a bit to find a tool to extract them).

Another way I extract interesting ambiant sounds or music is using Audacity and recording my audio card out then running the game with sounds disabled to listen only to music or enabling only the ambiant track to record ambiant sounds.

There's also games and movies OSTs that is an excellent source of music.

You can find many sound effects (birds cawing to crowds to things burning to things exploding to water running to-- well you got it) on http://www.freesound.org/ :) I always go there to before running a new campaign to get appropriate sound effects for various scenes :)

Potential good news on the Mac OS X and iOS front.

Some apple related requirements may be popping up at work in the medium term. So I'll be allocated budget for a Mac and an iPad2 at some point.

So whatever I learn doing real life work will benefit any action on the Softrope iOS/OS X front.

Unfortunately as a UK resident Kickstarter is not really an option.

"To be eligible to start a Kickstarter project, you need to satisfy the requirements of Amazon Payments:

Be a US resident and at least 18 years of age with a social security number (or EIN), a US bank account, US address, US state-issued ID (driver’s license), and major US credit or debit card."

Perhaps he should put up an entry on Kickstarter.com. He could get people to donate and make it worth his while. I really like the program and would love to see an Iphone version.

Grouping things into categories would be great. On an iOS device I'd imagine swiping pages or something similar. Not sure what the desktop metaphor would be.

For now though you can just launch multiple copies of Softrope and handle it that way.

Hi Iain.

As a new member (though I discovered Softrope earlier this year) I wanted to thank you very much for a great, user-friendly program to bring more life to all forms of storytelling. Well done! Fantastic!

I originally came across it when looking for ways of incorporating music into D&D sessions with my friends. I was immediately taken by the ease-of-use, and spent countless hour searching for, and downloading, free sound effects of all sorts, and finally finding a use for my movie soundtrack CD's (other than my own listening enjoyment).

I am unfortunately a layman computer user, and have no clue how difficult it is to create these sort of programs, but, if I may, I'd like to give a tentative suggestion to the interface. Would it be possible to create:

-a way to make separate columns, tabs, or an other form of division, which allows the scenes to be divided into groups?

This way scenes that are relevant in the moment could be displayed, while others could be reached quickly by switching to another tab. De-cluttering the Softrope window, if you like.

What do you think?

THANK YOU again for the great program. Keep up the fantastic work, and I look forward to reading about new progress, and future brain-storming.

P.S. Best of wishes to living in your new house.

I too use Softrope almost every session. I am GM of a few different settings, from fantasy to present day horror, in which I use Softrope with all.
Life as a gamer would be alot more boring without Softrope.

If one is allowed a few suggestions I would go with the ones above. An iOs/Mac OS-version with AirPlay would make it perfect.
Some way to make the scenes self contained, so that you can save the files and transfer the scenes from different computers (with the sounds attached) instead of now when the scene stops abruply when you have removed a file.

Softrope/self contained scenes + SugarSync or Dropbox /iOs-version would be great.

I use this every game session. It's actually the only reason I still use a pc. If this was on my iPad with AirPlay, I'd be I'n heaven. I'm willing to make a donation if it's needed to keep the project running.

I'd say the priority should be:
1. iOs iPad/iPhone for broad usage (so you can get some cash too)
2. Ability to save files in archives.
3. AirPlay.

Perhaps donations can get you started with a developer licence? I'm a good designer, but i'm not experienced with coding enough to be of any real help.
