Grouping things into categories would be great. On an iOS device I'd imagine swiping pages or something similar. Not sure what the desktop metaphor would be.

For now though you can just launch multiple copies of Softrope and handle it that way.

Hi Iain.

As a new member (though I discovered Softrope earlier this year) I wanted to thank you very much for a great, user-friendly program to bring more life to all forms of storytelling. Well done! Fantastic!

I originally came across it when looking for ways of incorporating music into D&D sessions with my friends. I was immediately taken by the ease-of-use, and spent countless hour searching for, and downloading, free sound effects of all sorts, and finally finding a use for my movie soundtrack CD's (other than my own listening enjoyment).

I am unfortunately a layman computer user, and have no clue how difficult it is to create these sort of programs, but, if I may, I'd like to give a tentative suggestion to the interface. Would it be possible to create:

-a way to make separate columns, tabs, or an other form of division, which allows the scenes to be divided into groups?

This way scenes that are relevant in the moment could be displayed, while others could be reached quickly by switching to another tab. De-cluttering the Softrope window, if you like.

What do you think?

THANK YOU again for the great program. Keep up the fantastic work, and I look forward to reading about new progress, and future brain-storming.

P.S. Best of wishes to living in your new house.

Thanks for letting me know.

Every new user is another reason to sit down at the computer and do some more work on Softrope!

I'm moving house a week on Thursday! Looking forward to my own office and having a computer at home!

I just had a similar idea for a nice Softrope icon. What if you made a musical note out of rough hemp rope, then above it printed 50FT? It would be attractive, memorable, and hook into the joke of the name a bit too.

First of all, I'm all new to this little gem. I appreciate your work on this so far. However I have some ideas for improvement and even a bug (shame on you ;) ).

Bug: A starting delay in a loop is not saved. When I close the editing of a scene and reopen it the starting delay is always set to zero.

On improvements let me suggest the following to you:

- In the openfiledialog let the user select multiple files. For example I wanted to create a sewer scene with multiple different kind of drops, dripples and so on. I had to add a new sample for each manually. I think it might improve the usability if you let the user select multiple file and create a sample for each file automatically.

- An other idea might be to save the window size of a scene-editing window on closing.

- A thing i realy miss is to export the sound/music files as a single archive (or similar). Reason is to use softrope on different machines or burn a CD of the whole scene. For the buring i would suggest to let the user decide how many minutes he wants to have of this scene and then generate a single file (mp3 for instance).

I hope you keep up the great work.

Well actually you can share them. It's not perfectly integrated and takes some effort but it'd work.

You copy all the sound files you use (per Scenario) into one folder on your computer (Preferably in a path everyone could use, something like "C:\Softrope\Scenarios\Jungle\"). Then you save your Scenario file inside that folder, too. Open the scenario file with a text editor (notepad++, or if nothing else works even ye olde windows notepad) and change all paths to all those files to their new home, the just created folder, leave all other settings in them alone. Save the file again and try it out inside Softrope, it should work just as before, only that it now uses the files inside that folder. Add a text file in the scenario folder that says where it's supposed to be, pathwise, so that we're able to put it in place accordingly later. Now zip that folder up ito a nice package and upload it to a file hosting service like Rapid Share or Mega Upload and present us the download link here.
You can do that with either each scenario at a time or just zip em all together at once (but that'd prolly result in a very big file, that might exceed the max capacity of the hosting service).

Sure there is an issue with sound files that are protected by copyright, but as this is a very small community, it's more like lending a CD to a friend than "mass distributing" it so I guess it's not THAT much of an issue.
To make sure only "we" can use the file you could always password protect the zip or rar archives and post the password here in the forums.

Cheers ;)
The Dukey

I love this program too! My players dig it, which is all well and good, but I even put it on sometimes and listen to my inn scene as background noise; I've got lots of great Renaissance music that plays through it, and a bunch of obnoxious drunks who make me chuckle every time they come on. And my kids love it too; my 5 yr old son is always asking me to put on the jungle scene :-) I only wish I could share the scenes I've built!
